Prominent Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has weighed in on the shifting business models within Nollywood, attributing the recent exodus of creators toward YouTube to Nigeria's currency exchange rates rather than creative preference. Speaking on the Builders Podcast, Afolayan argued that the financial allure of earning in foreign currency during a period of a weak naira is the primary driver behind the platform's surge in popularity among local directors and producers.
Addressing whether YouTube represents the future of Nigerian cinema over traditional theatrical releases and streaming deals, Afolayan maintained that the platform has clear structural limits. While acknowledged as an accessible starting point for independent creators who lack access to major players, YouTube cannot match the scale, prestige, or direct payout models offered by global giants like Netflix and Prime Video. For many, it simply serves as a flexible alternative when negotiation leverage is low.
The real incentive, according to Afolayan, lies strictly in the math of FX monetization. With international platforms paying out in dollars, creators converting their earnings into naira enjoy significant returns during periods of inflation and currency depreciation. However, he cautioned that this business model remains entirely dependent on economic volatility, noting that if the naira were to strengthen significantly against the dollar, creators would quickly abandon the platform for other avenues.
Afolayan's insights highlight broader economic shifts in Nollywood, trailing previous industry debates surrounding theatrical box office returns and distribution profitability. Reflecting on the physical and financial hurdles of high-budget filmmaking, he also shared the harsh conditions endured during the production of his 2022 epic Aníkúlápó. Due to a lack of proper accommodation on location, lead cast members—including Sola Sobowale and Bimbo Ademoye—had to bring their own appliances and squat in local homes, an ordeal that ultimately prompted him to construct dedicated lodging at his film village for future projects.
