Popular Nigerian comedian and social commentator Debo Adedayo, best known as Mr Macaroni, has revealed why he has no intention of entering the political arena. Addressing the public in a viral video, the content creator shared his candid thoughts on the systemic flaws within the nation's political landscape, explaining how it has the power to corrupt even the most respected figures.
A primary factor in his hesitation stems from watching individuals he once held in high regard compromise their values upon taking office. "I look at Nigeria, and I don't think I want to get into the political space because it seems like the political space in Nigeria corrupts the very best of us," he stated. He pointed out that several leaders he previously admired ended up tarnishing their long-standing legacies after stepping into government roles, leaving him thoroughly uninspired by the system.
In addition to systemic corruption, Mr Macaroni voiced deep frustration over the challenges that public advocates face, including the unexpected backlash from the very citizens they try to represent. He noted that standing up for the public often leaves activists feeling isolated or unfairly targeted. "The same Nigerians that you speak for turn against you," he lamented, describing how advocates are frequently painted as troublemakers despite their efforts to push for positive change.
The activist also criticized the tendency of the general public to quickly move past major socio-economic struggles rather than demanding lasting accountability. Citing the ongoing public reaction to skyrocketing fuel prices, he observed that outrage usually lasts only a day or two before people adjust and carry on. He cautioned against normalizing hardship, challenging the common narrative that surviving in the country is a badge of honor. "Nigerians take pride in telling you, 'if you can survive in Nigeria, you can survive anywhere.' It's not something to brag about," he emphasized.
