The Nigerian film industry has been plunged into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru, who passed away at the age of 57 after a brief illness. His death comes just two years after the heartbreaking loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, marking a tragic period for the family and sparking a wave of tributes across the entertainment landscape.
The news was confirmed by the actor's family through a statement published on his official Instagram page in the early hours of October 23, 2026. Expressing deep sorrow while thanking well-wishers for their support, the family requested prayers as they navigate the devastating loss.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” the statement read.
This tragic passing follows the loss of his son, Ifeanyi, who died at age 15 in August 2024. At the time, Duru shared a touching tribute on social media, honoring the teenager as his “champ” and “lion,” while expressing gratitude to God despite the profound grief.
Francis Duru launched his acting career in 1989 and achieved nationwide fame in the 1990s for his iconic portrayal of Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s legendary film Rattlesnake. Over a distinguished career spanning more than three decades, he established himself as a versatile performer and a pillar of Nollywood. Beyond his achievements on screen, he contributed significantly to the industry through leadership, serving as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) in 2010 and earning a appointment as a United Nations Ambassador of Peace in 2007.
