Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has opened up about his ongoing health challenges, revealing that he currently faces severe mobility issues and frequent bodily swelling. The iconic 79-year-old screen icon shared details about his condition during a recent visit to Ghana, where he went to support fellow ailing actor Emmanuel Armah.
Speaking about his current physical state, Edochie admitted that while he remains hopeful about regaining his strength, day-to-day movement has become a significant hurdle. He explained that various parts of his body, particularly his hands and legs, periodically swell before returning to normal size, creating ongoing discomfort and difficulty walking.
“Sitting down here, I am not very well myself,” Edochie shared. “Walking is a problem for now, but I still have hope that I will recover myself. Sometimes, I get up, and some parts of my body are swollen, then it goes down after some time, like my hand and leg are now.”
Despite his physical limitations, the acclaimed actor expressed deep spiritual resilience and shared a poignant prayer regarding his life and legacy. He emphasized that his primary wish is to maintain dignity and avoid becoming a burden to his family and caregivers.
“I just keep asking God, you are the author and finisher of life, whenever it’s time to go, just take me. Don’t let me bother the people around me,” Edochie said.
Renowned for his commanding presence, deep voice, and legendary interpretations of traditional elders, Edochie stands as one of the most celebrated figures in African cinema, with a career spanning over four decades. His candid remarks have deeply touched fans across the continent, particularly during a challenging period for Nigeria's film industry, which has mourned the passage of several prominent actors across different generations in recent months.
