Popular Nigerian actress turned evangelist, Tonto Dikeh, has shared a poignant testimony regarding her past struggle with drug addiction, delivering a message of hope and warning to young people while reflecting on how her life was transformed through faith.
Opening up about her journey, the actress described the deep turmoil, pain, and self-destruction that defined her past before she found Christ. Addressing the public scrutiny that once followed her life, Tonto explained that the controversial behavior and chaos people frequently judged were not who she truly was, but rather a desperate cry for help from a soul trapped in addiction and unspoken emotional pain.
"I was once the chaos people judged. The noise. The mess. The broken decisions. But what many didn’t see was the truth behind it all," Tonto shared. "Behind the anger, the addiction, the self-destruction, was a soul screaming for help, not attention. I was desperate for relief, for peace, for someone to see past my actions and hear my cry."
Reflecting on the underlying issues that led to her substance abuse, she emphasized that drugs were merely a coping mechanism for deeper wounds. "Drugs weren’t the problem; they were the symptom. Addiction wasn’t my identity; it was my escape from pain I didn’t know how to name," she stated. "And yet, God heard the cries I couldn’t articulate. When people saw chaos, Heaven saw a wounded soul worth rescuing. When I was written off, God was writing a comeback."
Crediting divine grace for her total restoration and newfound purpose, the evangelist urged the public to shift their perspective on those currently battling substance abuse. Rather than writing off individuals caught in addiction, she encouraged people to separate the individual from the illness and offer empathy and prayers instead of condemnation.
"So hate the drugs. Hate the addiction. But never stop praying for the person trapped inside it," Tonto urged. "Because that person is not weak, not worthless, not beyond redemption. I am living proof that behind the chaos can be a destiny waiting for healing. And if God could pull me out, restore me, and give me a voice, then no soul is too far gone."
