Afrobeats singer Magixx has shared insights into the financial dynamics of the Nigerian music industry, stating that it is virtually impossible for an artiste to build substantial wealth without releasing a hit song that resonates internationally.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, the Mavin Records star explained that achieving long-term financial stability requires musicians to consistently follow up their breakthrough tracks with more hit records.
Reflecting on his personal experience, Magixx revealed that being signed to a prominent record label does not instantly guarantee financial success. He shared that despite joining Don Jazzy’s renowned Mavin Records, it took him two to three months before he began earning any revenue from his music.
“Even when you get signed to a big record label as an artist, you first have to drop a song with international appeal before you start making serious money,” Magixx explained. “It took 2–3 months after Don Jazzy signed me before I started earning from music.”
The singer described the initial period before his breakout as a tough balancing act, where he faced mounting personal bills and family obligations while attempting to maintain the polished image expected of a rising star.
“Before the money started coming, I was struggling with bills and family responsibilities,” he admitted. “The worst part is that if I ask people for financial assistance, they would say I am signed to a big label, and money shouldn't be my problem. It was difficult because I had to maintain the lifestyle of a superstar with expensive designer clothes.”
Magixx emphasized that performance fees—a core income stream for many musicians—are directly tied to an artiste's catalog of hits. As a singer generates more successful songs, their market value and booking fees increase significantly.
“Eventually, the money started coming,” he noted. “One hit song can earn you N500,000–N700,000 per show, while another hit can take your fee to N1.5 million.”
