Former Big Brother Naija housemate and popular media personality Natacha Akide, widely known as Tacha, has called on the organisers of the flagship reality show to take a hiatus. Speaking during an appearance on Arise 360, Tacha suggested that a temporary break is necessary for the production team to rethink their strategy, revamp their format, and deliver fresh content that can capture the public's attention once again.
Tacha’s argument relies heavily on the evolving media landscape in Nigeria. She noted that Big Brother Naija rose to prominence at a time when social media had not yet achieved its current cultural dominance. Today, digital platforms serve as constant sources of real-time drama and entertainment, creating fierce competition for traditional television programming and changing how audiences consume media.
To illustrate how easily social media distracts viewers from televised content, Tacha pointed to real-life trending events online that capture public attention instantly. She explained that with so much unscripted entertainment happening on social media platforms every day, a reality show must offer something truly extraordinary to keep people tuned in.
Beyond the need for a fresh production strategy, the reality star emphasized that absence could make the audience's hearts grow fonder. By taking a hiatus, the organisers would give Nigerians the opportunity to actually miss the show, creating natural anticipation for its return.
“I think they need to take a break, re-strategise and just come up with something because we are really at an era where everything happens on social media,” Tacha said. “You don’t want us watching housemates in the house, meanwhile P-Square is giving us part seven of his family issues… we have come to a point where everyone is so comfortable with social media right now.”
She concluded by noting that Nigerian audiences have become increasingly difficult to satisfy, making a simple formulaic approach insufficient for long-term viewer retention. “They need to cook, like they need to try to do something different which will be much more mind-blowing and more interesting to Nigerians because Nigerians are hard to please.”
