Nigeria’s Super Falcons booked their place in the WAFCON 2026 quarterfinals in emphatic fashion on Wednesday, August 6, crushing Egypt 6-2 in their final Group C fixture in Rabat. Coming into the match needing a decisive victory following a rocky start to the tournament that included an opening loss to Malawi and a narrow win over Zambia, the nine-time African champions produced an explosive offensive display featuring six different goalscorers.
The match opened with early Nigerian pressure, culminating in the 21st minute when Asisat Oshoala converted a penalty after a VAR review confirmed an Egyptian handball inside the box. Gift Monday doubled the lead soon after with a neat finish, before Egypt's Nadine Ghazi pulled one back from the penalty spot just before halftime to leave the score at 2-1. However, the second half belonged entirely to Nigeria, fueled by an outstanding performance from winger Rinsola Babajide, who pulled the strings from the right flank and earned Woman of the Match honors with two fine assists.
Substitute Uchenna Kanu restored Nigeria's two-goal cushion in the 57th minute off Babajide's pass, before Christy Ucheibe netted an 81st-minute penalty. Though Ghazi scored her second of the night three minutes later to briefly make it 4-2, the Super Falcons dominated stoppage time. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade buried a penalty in the 91st minute before setting up Joy Omewa to seal the overwhelming six-goal victory.
Despite the celebration, the night brought an injury scare for the team, as Oshoala was forced off the pitch prematurely and will be closely monitored ahead of their next test. Nigeria finished second in Group C with six points, setting up a heavyweight quarterfinal clash against Cameroon in Rabat on August 9. A victory against their long-standing rivals will not only send the Super Falcons into the WAFCON semifinals but will also guarantee automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
