Nigerian singer Skales has voiced strong condemnation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following a controversial raid conducted in the Lekki area of Lagos State. Reacting to footage circulating online, the musician recalled his own harrowing experience with the anti-graft agency and urged operatives to direct their energy toward corrupt politicians rather than harassing young Nigerians.
Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Skales criticized the early morning operation, which was carried out by the commission to apprehend suspected cybercrime fraudsters. He argued that while financial crime should not be tolerated, the agency’s methods often cross the line into abuse of power.
“So EFCC is back to be a nuisance again … it’s time for the youths to stand against these evil people who will leave politicians who stole billions and be disturbing young people,” Skales wrote.
The artist also shared a video showing a woman who was reportedly injured during the raid, calling on the commission to carry out its duties with decency and respect for human rights.
“I just saw a video of the abuse EFCC personnel did to a lady … the misuse of power needs to stop … show the same energy to the politicians that steal billions … the youth are not your problem… stop acting like armed robbers,” he stated. He added, “I am not a fan of fraud, nor a friend to anyone who partakes in it, so I condemn it!! No one has a problem with you doing your job, but do it with decency! Stop the abuse!”
Skales' intense reaction stems from a traumatic encounter with the anti-graft agency in October 2023. Operatives reportedly broke into his residence while he was asleep alongside his six-month-old daughter following a performance. The ordeal left his family shaken, forcing them to relocate to alternative accommodation and prompting him to overhaul his home security measures.
His latest statements align with a growing wave of public outrage on social media over the conduct of EFCC officers during nighttime and early-morning residential operations.
In response to the backlash, the EFCC released a statement defending the operation at Applewood Estate in Lekki, describing the raid as professional and law-abiding. The commission confirmed that its Lagos Directorate 1 operatives arrested 21 suspected cybercrime fraudsters and recovered five exotic cars.
Addressing the controversy surrounding the woman seen in the online videos, the EFCC explained that she attempted to alert suspects by making phone calls during the operation, leading officers to temporarily confiscate her device before returning it at the conclusion of the raid. The agency further stated that preliminary investigations implicated 19 of the 21 suspects—who will be charged in court—while two individuals were exonerated and released.
