Veteran Nollywood actress Stella Damasus has credited the hit Netflix series To Kill a Monkey with reinvigorating her acting career, revealing that she was not the original choice for the breakout role that brought her renewed global recognition.
Speaking on Pulse Nigeria’s Old Vs New segment, where she reacted to highlights from her past and present filmography, Damasus explained that the crime thriller—created by acclaimed director Kemi Adetiba—fundamentally shifted how both audiences and industry insiders view her versatility as an actress. She noted that fans still regularly approach her to quote lines spoken by her character, Nosa, with recognition reaching her well beyond Nigeria in places like the United States, Canada, and Ireland.
However, landing the defining role was far from straightforward. Damasus revealed that the character of Nosa was initially written for a much younger actress, and casting for the production was already wrapping up when her management urged her to submit a self-tape with less than 24 hours before the deadline. Being in the United States at the time, she had to record her audition over a remote video call, relying on a fellow actor in Nigeria to read lines opposite her.
After submitting the tape, silence followed. Assuming the role had been handed to someone else, Damasus moved on, only to receive unexpected news weeks later: the production team was so impressed by her audition that they chose to rewrite the character specifically to fit her instead of hiring a younger actor.
Damasus described the shoot as an intense, demanding experience that pushed her to refine her craft despite decades of industry experience. She credited her co-stars—including Lilian Afegbai, William Benson, Bucci Franklin, and Sunshine Rosman—for fostering a high-standard environment on set that elevated everyone's performance.
Premiering on Netflix in July 2025, To Kill a Monkey follows a man lured into the dark world of cybercrime after reuniting with a childhood friend, with Damasus delivering a standout performance as his wife, Nosa. The series has since been widely praised as one of Kemi Adetiba’s finest works, following the massive success of her King of Boys franchise.
