Spotify recently brought fans up close with Nigerian music icons Tems and Runtown across two nights of its signature 'Surround Sound' live performance series in Lagos. Held at Livespot on September 25 and 26, 2026, the exclusive event invited selected Spotify Premium listeners—identified purely based on their streaming habits—to experience their favorite artists in an intimate, in-the-round setting designed to bridge the distance between creator and audience.
Launched out of Sub-Saharan Africa, Surround Sound is Spotify’s bespoke live format that captures high-energy, close-range concerts and turns them into full-length music films. Rooted in the rich cultural backdrop of Lagos, the platform places local artists and their most dedicated listeners directly at the center of the music narrative.
Opening the showcase, Grammy-winning singer Tems revisited foundational chapters of her discography, delivering soulful renditions of tracks from her landmark EP For Broken Ears, including "Ice T" and "Damages." Her set list seamlessly bridged her artistic evolution, pairing early breakout singles like "Mr Rebel" and "Try Me" with recent hits such as "Love Me JeJe" and "What You Need."
Reflecting on her early days prior to taking the stage, Tems recalled the modest origins of her global smash hit "Free Mind," revealing that she produced the track on her laptop while sitting on her bed, experimenting with chord progressions until the melodies took shape. Spotify’s connection to her journey runs deep; back in September 2020, following the release of For Broken Ears, Tems was selected as the third artist for Spotify’s RADAR Africa initiative. Returning six years later to perform those iconic songs live in Lagos brought her artist trajectory full circle, with Tems turning to face the crowd and inviting fan vocals to merge into the live arrangement.
The following night featured Runtown, who captivated the audience with a career-spanning performance backed by a live band—his first time performing with a live ensemble in a decade. He kicked off his set with energetic renditions of "Lagos to Kampala" and "Gallardo," before flowing through fan favorites like "For Life," "International Badman Killa," "Unleash," and "Kini Issue."
The defining moment of Runtown's performance came with his 2016 hit "Mad Over You," which turned into a massive crowd sing-along. The connection in the room was so potent that Runtown performed the single once during the core set and returned to deliver an encore performance to close out the night, backed by the voices of the audience.
The event highlighted the deep, lasting connection fans maintain with both artists' discographies. Spotify’s September 2026 data analysis revealed that over 21% of listeners who streamed Tems’ For Broken Ears in early 2022 were still actively streaming it in mid-2026, while Runtown's "Mad Over You" had been added to more than three million user-generated playlists globally.
To curate the audience, Spotify bypassed traditional public ticketing entirely. Instead, the platform leveraged listening data to issue direct invitations to dedicated Spotify Premium subscribers in Lagos. Rifumo Mdaka of Spotify explained that maintaining a fixed, intimate capacity was essential to creating a high-quality environment for both the attendees and the live film capture.
Both performances were filmed live on location. The resulting concert films, Surround Sound presents Tems and Surround Sound presents Runtown, are set to launch on Spotify in the near future, giving global audiences a front-row seat to the Lagos performances. Official release dates will be announced soon.
