Nigerian entrepreneur and media personality Sophia Momodu has shared the profound emotional and psychological toll she endured after becoming pregnant out of wedlock with global Afrobeats icon Davido. Speaking on Monday at a United Nations General Assembly event in New York, Momodu reflected on the public scrutiny, harsh judgment, and intense social pressure that followed her pregnancy as the daughter of a pastor.
Recounting her journey before an international audience, Momodu explained how the public backlash deeply affected her well-being. "I am a pastor's daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock by a global superstar, and I was mocked. It was crazy. I had to find myself in the midst of all that," she revealed. She noted that in Nigerian society, born-out-of-wedlock pregnancies—especially within devout Christian households—are often viewed as severe social taboos, magnifying the intense criticism directed at her.
Despite gaining widespread fame through her relationship, Momodu explained that the constant wave of negative commentary temporarily stripped away her agency and confidence. "For a long time, I didn't have a voice despite being famous. I was worried and getting drained by the negative criticisms," she stated, describing how the emotional weight of public shame left her feeling silenced and overwhelmed.
Her turning point came after years of being advised to stay quiet about her experience to avoid further public embarrassment. Recognizing that suppressing her reality was only prolonging her trauma, she chose to reject the shame associated with her story and reclaim her narrative. Today, as the mother of Davido's first child, Imade Adeleke, Momodu uses her platform to advocate for self-recovery and speak out against psychological abuse and social stigmatization.
