Nigerian singer Skales has publicly commended female artistes in the Nigerian music industry, acknowledging the unique hurdles they navigate to achieve success. The "Shake Body" crooner took to his X handle to voice his admiration, emphasizing that establishing a career as a woman in the entertainment landscape is far from easy.
"Big up all the females in the entertainment industry… it ain’t easy being a woman in this industry… big up to y’all for real," Skales wrote in his post.
His statement comes in the wake of a widely discussed podcast interview featuring singer Fave, which reignited conversations surrounding the systemic challenges faced by women in Afrobeats and the broader entertainment space.
Speaking on the Afropolitan podcast, Fave opened up about the pressure on female musicians, pointing out that success for women often depends on more than just musical talent. She explained that female creators are frequently subjected to intense scrutiny regarding their sex appeal alongside their artistic output, making their path to the top considerably steeper than that of their male counterparts.
Fave also reflected on how she and her contemporaries have helped redefine expectations for women in Afrobeats. She noted that artistes like Tems, Ayra Starr, and herself introduced unconventional vocal textures that challenged the traditional standards previously expected of female vocalists. "When Tems, I, and Ayra Starr came into the scene, we came with different voices that were different from the very feminine voice people were used to. Before us, female artistes used to sing in a very feminine way," she explained.
Skales' public support highlights a growing solidarity among Nigerian musicians, drawing renewed attention to the resilience required of women carving out their space in the global music industry.
