Nollywood actress Sharon Ooja has opened up about the intense emotional and mental demands that come with portraying characters living with bipolar disorder. Speaking during a recent interview with Arise TV, the 35-year-old screen star shared how stepping into such complex roles pushes her to her limits as an actor, while also reshaping her perspective on mental health.
Ooja explained that portraying a character with bipolar disorder requires navigating extreme, rapid shifts in emotion—from deep sadness and intense anger to overwhelming happiness—all within a short span of time. Maintaining these intense psychological transitions throughout a performance proves to be an exhausting task, leaving her mentally drained long after the cameras stop rolling.
The filming process also presents unique performance challenges on set. The actress recalled moments when her director had to intervene and guide her back into character whenever she unconsciously slipped back into her natural emotional state. "My director would sometimes have to call me because he’s like, 'You’re not staying on tempo, you’re going back to normal, you can’t be normal,'" she shared. "So, it was so draining having to be crying, laughing, angry—so many emotions in one."
Despite the heavy physical and emotional toll, Ooja noted that the experience offered her a valuable gift: a deeper sense of empathy. Stepping into the shoes of someone navigating severe mood fluctuations gave her a profound appreciation for the real-life struggles of those living with mental health conditions, bridging the gap between dramatic performance and real-world understanding.
