Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ruth Kadiri has voiced strong concern over the widespread circulation of counterfeit and unsafe products across Nigeria, calling on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to take urgent and decisive action to protect public health.
In a video shared on her Instagram page, the movie star warned that fake, poorly processed, and contaminated consumable items—ranging from daily food supplies and beverages to vital medicines, cosmetics, and household goods—pose a direct threat to human life. She stressed that the issue extends beyond standard commercial malpractice, highlighting the severe health hazards being inflicted on unsuspecting consumers, including young children.
"Every day, people buy food, drinks, medicine, cosmetics, and household products believing that they are safe, but sadly, some are poorly produced, contaminated, harmful and mostly fake," Kadiri said. "This is not just a business problem; it’s a threat to human life. Imagine little children battling kidney failure."
Illustrating her concerns with a personal experience, the actress described how a recent purchase raised immediate alarm. She recalled blending freshly bought garlic, only to return minutes later to discover that its color had dramatically altered, raising serious doubts about the safety and purity of basic market produce.
Kadiri added that such experiences are no longer isolated incidents, noting that many Nigerians regularly encounter questionable and potentially hazardous items on store shelves. The anxiety surrounding product safety has made routine purchases a source of fear for parents across the country.
"I’m literally afraid of buying already packed drinks for my kids because I am scared of what the outcome of that drink will be," she shared, making a direct plea to the regulatory body to ramp up enforcement. "NAFDAC, please pay attention to the lives of Nigerians. Lots and lots of people are sick and are not getting better."
