Nollywood actress Adunni Ade has opened up about the personal and professional backlash she faced after revealing her religious identity. Speaking in a candid interview with media personality Chude Jidenowo, the screen star shared that she previously felt compelled to keep her Muslim faith private due to the unspoken pressures within the Nigerian movie industry, where she claimed openly practicing Islam feels "almost forbidden."
Ade explained that the industry environment made her hesitant to speak out for a long time, noting that actors who publicly identify as Muslim risk being looked down upon or marginalized. However, the actress eventually reached a point where she was tired of keeping her faith a secret and chose to speak her truth, emphasizing that Islam offered the spiritual path that worked best for her personal life.
The decision to go public was met with an immediate shift from a segment of her fanbase. Ade revealed that numerous Christian followers unfollowed her across social media platforms following her announcement. Others took a step further by reaching out directly to criticize her decision, send unsolicited prayers, or express concern over her spiritual direction, while Muslim fans largely welcomed her declaration with open arms.
Addressing her personal view on spirituality, Ade clarified that her choice was not a criticism of other beliefs, noting that she has attended various churches in the past and respects Christianity. For her, true faith centers on internal character and how one treats others rather than mere outward appearances. Unbothered by the loss of followers or public reaction, Ade maintained that her focus remains entirely on her personal journey and what brings her peace.
