Veteran Nollywood icon Pete Edochie has paid a deeply moving tribute to his late colleague and lifelong friend, Olu Jacobs, reflecting on their shared history, Jacobs' enduring legacy, and the quiet dignity with which he faced his final years. The legendary actor’s passing marks the end of a golden era in Nigerian cinema, prompting a flood of tributes from peers and fans across the globe.
Recalling their close personal bond, Edochie described Jacobs as a remarkably peaceful and humorous colleague who maintained a tight-knit inner circle. According to Edochie, Jacobs created a quiet private life that was shared almost exclusively between himself, his wife Joke Silva, and Edochie. Speaking on the inevitability of life's journey, Edochie honored Jacobs' resilience throughout a challenging six-year battle with his health, commending the grace with which he endured his illness.
“Something must kill a man. Nobody can do it except God,” Edochie reflected. “If God says the amount of time allocated to you on earth is finished, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Olu, my brother, you fought like a man, like the soldier I have always known you to be. Rest in peace, my brother. Today, I commiserate with you for what you had to endure over a period of six years.”
Edochie also extended heartfelt praise to Jacobs' widow, veteran actress Joke Silva, for her unwavering love and care during her husband’s prolonged health struggles. Encouraging the industry and fans to find comfort in Jacobs' remarkably long and fruitful life, Edochie noted that among their generation of senior colleagues, Jacobs was blessed with rare longevity, reaching 84 years before his passing.
“Joke, you did your best, and while we must mourn that Olu has gone, we should also be glad and celebrate Olu’s life,” Edochie said, urging everyone to look back on his contributions with pride rather than sorrow alone.
Looking ahead to the preservation of Jacobs' impact on African cinema, Edochie expressed a deeply personal hope that the family's artistic lineage continues on screen. He prayed that one of Jacobs’ children would step into the world of acting, ensuring that future generations remain connected to the indelible footprint left behind by the screen icon.
“My one prayer is that one of Olu’s children takes to acting so that whenever we look at him, we’ll remember what Olu meant to all of us,” Edochie shared. “Olu was our movie senior, and he reacted that way to everybody he interacted with on audition. If it is true that people recognise one another after they have gone, then there’s a possibility that we will meet again.”
