Controversial Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has stirred fresh debate online after publicly calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to provide financial support to Nigerian artists. Reacting on Friday to a post on the President's official X handle—which detailed a high-profile meeting in Paris with media executive Vincent Bolloré of the Bolloré Group—the hip-hop star urged the administration to move beyond mere compliments and financially back the entertainment sector.
In his post, the rapper proposed that the federal government act as an ultimate record label, stepping in to fund creatives directly. "Baba come give boys advance from government funds. Na you go be the biggest label boss. Because of you, artists no go fight their labels and underground artists go see something," Odumodublvck wrote, adding, "Baba, come sign all of us. And I mean all of us."
The unconventional plea quickly sparked widespread backlash across social media platforms. Critics lambasted the artist for using his access to solicit government funds for entertainers while remaining conspicuously silent on pressing national issues, including soaring living costs, economic hardship, and rampant security challenges affecting ordinary citizens.
Defending his stance against the outcry, Odumodublvck pointed out that Nigerian musicians receive virtually no institutional backing compared to civil servants or corporate entities. He argued that despite putting the country on the global map through Afrobeats, artists are left to self-fund their projects entirely. "Jaga [Jagaban], give me to fly high. I deserve it, sir. Governmental backing for artists gatts dey," he insisted, maintaining that state-sponsored art funding is a legitimate demand.
The appeal has raised eyebrows among observers given the rapper's past political signaling. Odumodublvck previously earned widespread praise from fans for reportedly turning down a lucrative offer to perform at a Tinubu campaign event. His sudden shift toward soliciting funds directly from the presidency has left many questioning his political stance and consistency ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
