Nollywood achieved a monumental global milestone as tens of thousands of movie lovers gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos to watch a single film, turning a movie premiere into an official Guinness World Records moment. A staggering 51,000 qualifying viewers stayed from start to finish to watch the crime thriller Black Market, officially setting the record for the largest audience at a film screening in a single venue.
The historic screening took place on Saturday, September 26, easily eclipsing the previous world record of 43,624 viewers. That prior benchmark had stood since 2015, when the Filipino biographical drama Felix Manalo was screened at the Philippine Arena. While total attendance at TBS reached approximately 64,000 according to Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Guinness World Records strictly counted the 51,000 attendees who remained seated throughout the entire runtime. The official confirmation sparked massive cheers and fireworks across the venue.
Designed as a full-scale cultural festival rather than a traditional movie premiere, the event drew massive crowds with long queues spilling around TBS hours before showtime. Gates opened at 2:00 PM to kick off a day packed with music, games, and food vendors, followed by a glamourous red-carpet session at 3:00 PM before the main feature screened at 7:00 PM.
Directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and co-written with Abdul Tijani-Ahmed, Black Market follows the gripping story of five women embroiled in a cross-border smuggling ring amidst fuel scarcity and economic turmoil, whose high-stakes operation spirals out of control when one of their daughters is kidnapped. The star-studded ensemble features Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini (Itele D Icon), and Uzor Arukwe.
Months in the making, the record-breaking attempt was a coordinated collaboration between Rixel Studios, FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios, and Switch Visuals Production, backed by corporate partners and the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. For an industry accustomed to reaching global audiences on screens big and small, Black Market made history by transforming the audience itself into the main spectacle.
