Veteran Nollywood icon Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has strongly criticized what she describes as a pervasive culture of begging and entitlement in Nigerian society, urging individuals to embrace hard work and take personal responsibility.
Speaking during an episode of the talk show Activating Success With Love Idoko, the celebrated actress expressed her strong disapproval of begging, insisting that virtually everyone possesses the capacity to contribute value and earn a living regardless of their circumstances.
"A lot of Nigerians take opportunities for granted. And one thing we have to understand is that nobody owes you anything," Omotola remarked. "Nigerians now have a culture of begging. I don’t support or encourage begging. I believe that there is no reason why anybody can’t work. There is something you can do. There is a kind of value you can bring to humanity."
The movie star emphasized that financial strain is a universal experience across all socioeconomic classes, warning against the assumption that wealth shields individuals from having pressing needs of their own. She noted that allowing an entitlement mindset to justify constant solicitation only serves to diminish personal dignity and self-worth.
"Everybody has needs, including me. There are some needs I have that if I was entitled, I would go and beg certain people," she explained. "So, don’t feel like because you don’t have money like me, you are the only one who has a reason to beg. At every level, we all have needs, but we are all struggling through it."
Closing her message with a call for self-reliance, Omotola advised that seeking financial aid should strictly be reserved for extreme emergencies rather than becoming a routine habit.
"Try as much as you can not to beg and be a nuisance. Begging reduces your own self-worth," she cautioned. "If you must beg, let it be in a desperate situation—a life-and-death situation. And don’t do it with entitlement."
