Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh has revealed that his journey into acting was never part of his original career plan.
Speaking during a recent podcast interview, the actor, popularly known as "Osuofia," disclosed that he initially worked behind the scenes as a scriptwriter and had no intention of appearing before the camera. According to him, colleagues repeatedly encouraged him to try acting after noticing his natural ability to make people laugh.
Owoh explained that after considerable persuasion, he eventually agreed to perform on screen and quickly realized that audiences connected with his comic style.
"My coming in front of the camera was an accident,"
he said, noting that he was content with writing scripts before others pushed him into performing.
The actor recalled that one of his earliest opportunities came in the 1980s when the former Anambra Television (ATV) gave him a short stand-up comedy segment. The positive reception from viewers convinced him to continue acting, setting him on the path to becoming one of Nollywood's most beloved entertainers.
Reflecting on his decades-long career, Owoh also spoke about the downside of fame, admitting that celebrity status has significantly reduced his freedom and privacy. He noted that while many people admire the benefits of being famous, they often overlook the restrictions that come with public recognition. Today, Nkem Owoh remains one of Nollywood's most respected comic actors, with a career spanning several decades and memorable roles that have made him a household name across Africa.
