Nigerian public figures and entertainers have voiced intense frustration over the persistent electricity blackouts plaguing the country. Prominent personalities, including veteran actress Kate Henshaw, singer Spyro, and content creator Cute Abiola, have publicly called out government officials and electricity distribution companies over the deteriorating state of the nation's power sector.
Kate Henshaw Demands Answers From the Power Minister
In a video posted on her Instagram page, veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw directly confronted the Minister of Power, questioning the government's explanations for the ongoing light outages.
“Come on, Mr Minister of Power. No light. There's no light. There's hardly been any electricity. You people bring it for maybe five minutes, and then it's gone." — Kate Henshaw
Henshaw tackled reported claims from the ministry suggesting that some citizens had requested reduced power supply due to over-freezing appliances. She demanded that the minister release the names and phone numbers of anyone who allegedly made such a request, dismissing the claim as absurd.
The actress also expressed outrage that Nigerians continue to struggle with basic power supply in 2026, criticizing electricity distribution companies (DisCos) for continuously issuing bills despite non-existent service. She questioned where the trillions of naira allocated to the power sector over the years had gone, noting that despite tariff hikes under previous and current administrations, reliable electricity remains an unfulfilled promise.
Henshaw admitted that she had deliberately avoided commenting on national issues for much of the year due to the emotional toll it takes, but stated that the current situation was simply unacceptable.
Spyro Recounts Shocking Visit to EKDC Office
Adding his voice to the outcry, singer Spyro shared his frustrating experience after visiting an Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKDC) office to complain about the lack of power at his residence, where he pays for premium Band A service.
Expectant of answers, the singer was instead met with a stark reality: the electricity workers themselves were sitting in the dark without power.
“I went to EKDC office out of frustration to find out why I pay for Band A and yet zero electricity. On getting there, I got moved by compassion as the workers were literally fanning themselves with no electricity. The lady who attended to me said, 'My neighbors shame me for working here, yet I have no light.'" — Spyro
The encounter highlighted the systemic nature of the crisis, showing that even employees of the distribution companies suffer the exact same outages as the customers lodging complaints.
Cute Abiola Appeals to President Tinubu
Meanwhile, content creator and comedian Cute Abiola made a direct appeal to President Bola Tinubu concerning the worsening blackouts. He noted that even alternative power sources like solar setups are failing to cushion the effect of the prolonged outages, leaving everyday Nigerians and businesses struggling to operate.
Together, the entertainers emphasized that citizens deserve basic infrastructure and accountability after years of enduring an unreliable power grid.
