In a major milestone for Nigerian cinema, the Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) has officially chosen the period drama Dear Ajayi as the country's submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled to take place in 2027.
The announcement was made by the committee after a thorough review of eligible entries submitted during the entry window. As the official selection body recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the NOSC evaluated several Nigerian feature-length films before settling on the project to represent the country on the global cinema stage.
Directed, written, and produced by acclaimed filmmaker Damilola Orimogunje, Dear Ajayi is a period drama set in southwestern Nigeria during the 1990s. The narrative revolves around two sisters, Ade and Titi Ajayi, whose divergent paths collide when they are forced to care for their ailing mother. As they navigate grief, faith, personal ambition, and familial obligations, long-buried resentments surface, compelling both women to confront the choices that have defined their lives.
Congratulating the film's cast and crew, NOSC Chairperson Stephanie Linus expressed pride in the selection and extended best wishes to the creative team as they move into the next phase of the Academy Awards race. "We congratulate the filmmakers behind Dear Ajayi on their selection," Linus stated. "We look forward to presenting the film for the Academy’s consideration and wish the team every success in the next stage of the process."
While the selection marks an important step, it does not automatically guarantee a nomination. Dear Ajayi will now advance to the voting rounds conducted by the Academy’s International Feature Film committee, competing against official entries from film industries around the world for a coveted spot on the shortlist and, ultimately, the final nominations list.
