Nigerian media mogul Mo Abudu has launched EbonyLife Place London, a permanent cinema and cultural center dedicated exclusively to showcasing African and Black films. The venue, described as the first of its kind in the United Kingdom, opened its doors on Thursday, October 8, in South-West London near Nine Elms. Featuring a 160-seat auditorium, the facility will serve as a hub for cinema, live performances, and cultural events, while also highlighting African culinary arts and fashion. London Mayor Sadiq Khan was among the notable guests who attended the inauguration.
For Abudu, 62, the project stems directly from her personal history growing up in England. Speaking in an interview with BBC Africa, the entrepreneur reflected on childhood memories where public perceptions of Africa were heavily skewed toward poverty and despair—images shaped primarily by Western media coverage. She shared how she often found herself thrust into the role of an informal ambassador, constantly addressing uninformed and hurtful questions about her heritage.
Addressing those experiences, Abudu emphasized that creating counter-narratives is essential to confronting racism and systemic underrepresentation. She explained that while the new space is not meant to limit African content to niche venues, dedicated spaces remain crucial for communities to safely celebrate their heritage and share their own authentic stories. Taking control of the narrative, she noted, is the most effective way to change how the world views African culture.
The cinema plans to offer an inclusive membership scheme open to audiences of all backgrounds without any nationality or ethnic restrictions. While the full lineup is currently being finalized, the venue's programming will feature films from across the African continent, major global projects celebrating Black actors—including the next Black Panther installment—and productions from Abudu's own media banner. Looking ahead, the media executive hinted that this "mad dream" may soon expand internationally, expressing a desire to establish a similar venue in Paris through strategic partnerships.
