Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson has publicly called out consumer brand Power Oil over the alleged unauthorized and continued use of her image for promotional campaigns, four years after her official endorsement contract with the company came to an end.
Taking to her Instagram page, the movie star expressed strong frustration after discovering that her likeness is still being actively featured on billboards, public buses, and various advertisement channels across the country. Johnson questioned why the brand has persisted in deploying her photos without extending compensation, renewing the contract, or consulting her management team.
"Help me ask @poweroilng why? It has been years; I have not been paid or compensated for my image being used after my contract expired. You are still pushing ads with my image on them without consulting me. Why?" the actress wrote. "Please check your dm and revert to my team. Let us not play in dirty waters. Enough is Enough."
The actress further criticized the company's actions, pointing to standard international business practices and raising questions about accountability. "They have my face on buses, billboards, what have you? 4 years after my contract expired. The lawlessness. Can you do this in India, your country?" she added, referencing the corporate roots of the brand's parent group.
Johnson’s public complaint highlights broader, ongoing discussions within the entertainment industry regarding intellectual property, image rights, and celebrity endorsements. For public figures, commercial agreements explicitly define the timeline and scope within which a company may utilize an ambassador's image. Standard industry protocol mandates that once a contract expires, all promotional materials featuring the personality must be phased out unless a formal extension is negotiated.
As public attention turns toward brand compliance and intellectual property rights in celebrity marketing, Mercy Johnson has urged Power Oil to review communications from her team and address the matter directly.
