Wakanda has officially found its next protector.
In a blockbuster reveal at Comic-Con International on Saturday, Marvel Studios confirmed that BAFTA-winning British actor David Jonsson will lead the franchise’s third installment, stepping into the role of King T'Challa’s grown son.
The announcement marks the first time Marvel has officially passed the central Black Panther mantle to a new lead actor following the heartbreaking loss of Chadwick Boseman in 2020.
Passing the Torch at Comic-Con
The major reveal came during Marvel's crowded Hall H presentation, where franchise director Ryan Coogler took the stage alongside returning stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke.
Coogler—fresh off an Academy Award win for Best Original Screenplay for his vampire thriller Sinners—framed the news as a natural evolution of the story set up in 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
"The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played," Coogler told the crowd. "And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up, he comes of age."
Who is David Jonsson?
The 32-year-old London native has been steadily rising through critically acclaimed roles in British theater and television, earning widespread acclaim and a BAFTA for his standout screen performances.
Joining his new castmates on stage, Jonsson was visibly moved as he briefly addressed the audience:
"Thank you to this family that I have the honour and the blessing to join. I don't want to say too much, because I want to let the screen do the talking."
What This Means for Black Panther 3
- A Coming-of-Age Legacy: Rather than recasting T'Challa directly, Marvel is honoring Boseman’s legacy by jumping forward in time to follow his son, Prince T'Challa II, as he matures into the protector Wakanda needs.
- The Returning Core: With Coogler back at the helm and fan favorites Wright (Shuri) and Duke (M'Baku) returning, the emotional core of the franchise remains intact as the story pivots toward a new generation.
