Grammy-winning rapper Durk Devontay Banks, known professionally as Lil Durk, has been acquitted of all charges in a high-profile federal murder-for-hire trial. A Los Angeles jury returned a not-guilty verdict on all five federal felony counts after three days of deliberation. The trial stemmed from a 2022 daytime ambush in Los Angeles that resulted in the death of 24-year-old Saviay’a Robinson, the cousin of rival rapper Tyquian Bowman, better known as Quando Rondo.
Federal prosecutors had alleged that Banks orchestrated, ordered, and financed a retaliatory plot to murder Bowman following the 2020 killing of Banks’ close friend and collaborator, Dayvon "King Von" Bennett. However, the August 19, 2022, shooting ultimately claimed the life of Robinson instead. Defense attorneys maintained throughout the trial that Banks had zero involvement in the scheme, arguing that his former personal assistant, Kavon Grant, organized the execution of the planned attack without the rapper's knowledge.
The 33-year-old artist was originally arrested in 2024 and pleaded not guilty to charges that included conspiracy, stalking with a dangerous weapon, stalking resulting in death, and two counts related to murder-for-hire. His co-defendants, Deandre Dontrell Wilson and David Brian Lindsey, were convicted of stalking and conspiracy to commit stalking, though they were cleared of all other charges.
Supporters gathered outside the Los Angeles courthouse to celebrate the verdict, while defense attorney Drew Findling shared that Banks was deeply thankful for the jury's decision. The chart-topping artist has achieved massive commercial success since 2019, securing seven top-five albums on the US Billboard chart and collaborating with global superstars like Drake and J. Cole.
Despite the sweeping acquittal, Banks will remain in federal custody as he prepares for a separate trial scheduled for next month. The upcoming case involves serious federal racketeering, murder, and firearms charges. If convicted on all counts in the second trial, the rapper could face life imprisonment.
