British R&B singer Jorja Smith has revealed that her track ‘Alive,’ featuring Afrobeats superstar Wizkid, was originally conceived as a Wizkid song before she transformed it into her own. Speaking during an interview with JAM FM Berlin, Smith opened up about the origins of the collaboration while discussing her latest album, her creative process, and her thoughts on the rising presence of artificial intelligence in the music industry.
According to Smith, ‘Alive’ stands as the oldest track on her new project. The song came into being through Nigerian-British producer P2J (Richard Isong), who already had the foundational record in place with Wizkid. "P2J had that song with Wiz already, and then I heard it," Smith explained. She added that listening to Wizkid's existing verse was pivotal, serving as a creative roadmap that helped shape her own vocal contribution and direction for the track.
Describing the core emotion behind the record, Smith shared that the music evokes the thrill and magnetic pull of falling for someone new. "It was just reminding me of driving down to meet someone. There's like a driving force in the song, a pull," she said. To mirror that excitement and the feeling of fresh romance, the accompanying music video was shot on location in Paris.
The seamless collaboration comes as little surprise given the deep ties between Wizkid and P2J, a partnership that spans nearly a decade. P2J produced the majority of Wizkid’s critically acclaimed Made in Lagos album—including the global smash hit ‘Essence’ featuring Tems—as well as major tracks across More Love, Less Ego and Morayo. As one of Afrobeats' most consistent artist-producer pairings, it was natural for a P2J studio session to carry Wizkid's signature sound before Smith laid down her own take.
Beyond the music, Smith also addressed the uncanny impact of AI technology on her career, admitting that AI-generated tracks mimicking her voice have even managed to fool her own family members. Calling AI a "scary grey area," the singer noted that she and her team remain vigilant in monitoring and taking down unauthorized, fake content as it emerges online.
