Former Big Brother Naija housemate Erica Nlewedim has candidly reflected on the severe mental health struggles she endured following her exit from the reality show, revealing that years of persistent online harassment led her to seek therapy. Despite acknowledging that the platform transformed her life financially, the actress admitted that the darker side of fame left her battling constant anxiety. Opening up on her experience, the Lockdown edition star shared that opening social media apps triggered immediate dread, making her constantly worry about being the target of new internet outrage.
The relentless scrutiny eventually forced Nlewedim to step back from the public eye and take an extended break from acting in 2024 to protect her emotional well-being. Addressing the common sentiment that celebrities should simply grow accustomed to criticism, the reality icon pushed back, asserting that no one should ever have to normalize constant harassment and personal attacks simply because they chose a career in entertainment.
Beyond public trolling, Nlewedim faced painful friction within the film industry, where she felt dismissed by industry insiders who reduced her talent to her reality TV background. Despite having trained at a film school in London prior to entering the Big Brother house in 2020, she recounted how several Nollywood producers openly told her that she was only cast in lead roles to leverage her massive fanbase for ticket sales rather than her acting abilities. She shared that facing constant rejection and belittlement from producers proved to be a breaking point, ultimately driving her decision to step back from the screen to heal before gradually making her return to acting.
