Popular Nigerian singer Oludipe David, best known by his stage name Spyro, has candidly opened up about the deeply painful experiences of his upbringing and the strained relationship he shared with his father. Known for his calm demeanor and composed public image, the artist surprised fans by revealing that physical beatings and emotional scars inflicted by his father more than two decades ago continue to linger in his memory and affect his emotional well-being today.
The singer described an environment defined by severe physical discipline and a persistent lack of trust. Reflecting on the physical abuse he endured as a child, Spyro shared that his father would inflict beatings so harsh they left lasting physical and psychological marks. "My dad would beat you to kill you. I'll have marks from twenty-something years ago," he recalled, noting the frustration of his father dismissing these past events whenever they were brought up. This unaddressed past continues to create tension, with Spyro admitting that simply being in his father's presence can trigger an unexplained wave of anger that requires ongoing healing.
Adding to the emotional strain was his father's habit of publicly accusing him of wrongdoing, often portraying him negatively to relatives and community members. Despite his father being a pastor, Spyro explained that he was routinely made the primary suspect whenever money went missing. On occasions when his father realized the accusations were false, the attempts at reconciliation fell drastically short. "He will embarrass me, and when he eventually finds what he is looking for, he will buy you milk. What is milk supposed to do to the damage that has been done?" Spyro questioned.
Recounting what he considers one of the most heartbreaking moments of his childhood, Spyro remembered being injured by a primary school cleaner named Iya Romoke, who accidentally peeled his skin with a long fingernail. When he reported the incident at home, his father doubted his story. The following day at school, terrified by the cleaner's authority, the young boy hesitated, which his father interpreted as a sign of dishonesty. After the cleaner denied the act, Spyro's father took him home and flogged him severely—an event the singer credits with nearly breaking his spirit entirely.
Ultimately, Spyro credits his mother's unwavering support and affection for keeping him grounded through the ordeal. While the painful memories almost altered the trajectory of his character, his mother's love provided the necessary balance to help him survive the trauma. Today, the artist emphasizes that true resolution requires confronting these past experiences directly, stating that he cannot simply move forward while pretending the pain never happened.
