Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about his humble beginnings in the music industry, revealing that he was genuinely broke despite hailing from an exceptionally wealthy family. Speaking during a recent episode of the Uncut Podcast, the hitmaker clarified that his breakout debut single, "Back When"—where he famously sang about having no money and facing rejection—was not just artistic fiction, but a reflection of his actual life at the time.
The singer explained that his financial hardship was a direct consequence of defying his billionaire father, Chief Deji Adeleke. His father had insisted that he prioritize his university education over a music career, prompting Davido to leave home and strike out on his own. Cutting ties with his family's wealth left him without financial support, forcing him to navigate the music industry without a safety net while attempting to launch his career independently.
Recalling that challenging period, Davido shared what it was like to be surrounded by immense wealth while having no funds of his own. He noted that while he spent time around affluent friends who lived in luxury mansions in Ikoyi with police escorts, he was personally broke and struggling to make ends meet. The experience ultimately fueled the raw emotion behind "Back When," serving as the catalyst for his eventual rise to becoming one of Africa's biggest global music icons.
