Tems: "I Was Afraid of Fame and Tried to Live a Secret Life"
Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, better known to global audiences as Tems, has revealed that while she always desired musical success, the glare of the spotlight was something she actively tried to avoid.
Speaking during an episode of The Boost Podcast, the chart-topping artist disclosed that she spent a significant amount of time hiding her identity from fans because the reality of global fame felt overwhelming. Driven by a desire to preserve her privacy, she attempted to balance her growing music career with a quiet, everyday lifestyle.
"I would go to the airport and people say, 'You’re Tems.' I will be like, 'No, I’m not Tems.' I was so afraid, I wanted to continue my secret life, and I was like, 'God please, I don’t want to be in the spotlight,'" she recalled.
The singer explained that she only began adjusting to her public profile when her rising profile made it impossible to hide any longer. Her journey into the music industry took off in 2018 when she left her job as a digital marketer to pursue her passion full-time, releasing her debut single, "Mr Rebel," that same year.
Her career experienced a massive international breakthrough in 2020 following her feature on Wizkid’s hit single "Essence." Since then, Tems has embraced her position as one of Afrobeats' premier global ambassadors, despite her initial reluctance toward stardom.
