Nigerian actress Bunmi Nelson has reflected on her past choices within the film industry, opening up about how she once overlooked award-winning filmmaker Funke Akindele before her explosive rise to fame. Speaking during a candid interview on Biola Adebayo’s popular podcast, Talk to B, Nelson recounted how she failed to realize the immense potential Akindele possessed back in the mid-2000s, sharing that the experience ultimately taught her a harsh lesson about life, success, and humility.
Recalling their interactions around 2006 and 2007, Nelson explained that Akindele once reached out seeking her assistance to secure filming locations, even bringing veteran actress Mama Fali Werepe to her home in Magodo. At the time, Nelson actively provided locations and acted in soap operas, making her a valuable contact. However, despite Akindele’s persistent calls and encouragement to join the Yoruba movie sector during an era when the industry was far less crowded, Nelson repeatedly ignored her, admitting that she simply did not envision Akindele achieving the towering success she enjoys today.

She noted that Akindele was even the person who originally introduced her to the Odunfa Caucus, making her own decision to ignore subsequent calls all the more painful. Describing the missed chance as a major turning point, Nelson acknowledged that Akindele has grown so far ahead in the industry that catching up to her legacy now feels impossible.
Ultimately, Nelson framed her story as a vital cautionary tale for others, urging people never to look down on anyone or measure someone's future by their current status. Admitting that life taught her the hard way that nothing remains static, she emphasized that the experience fundamentally reshaped her character, leaving her far more humble and deeply aware of how quickly fortunes can change.
