British singer and rapper Khyra Wilson, professionally known as Kwn, has cleared up widespread misconceptions about her heritage, clarifying that she is actually half-Nigerian and not Jamaican as many of her fans have long believed.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Culture podcast, the "Worst Behaviour" hitmaker explained that the heavy Jamaican and Caribbean influences woven throughout her music stem from her upbringing rather than her direct ancestry. She revealed that her biological father is Nigerian, while her mother is Irish, though the distinct cultural environment she was raised in led many listeners to make assumptions about her background.
Kwn shared how consistently people misjudge her roots due to her sound and aesthetic. "I am half-Nigerian. Everyone thinks I am Jamaican, but I am not," she said. "I grew up around Caribbean culture, so people assume I am from the Caribbean. People find it difficult if I tell them I am Nigerian. Nobody has ever guessed that I am Nigerian until recently when someone guessed it."
Despite her proud heritage, the artist admitted that she has not yet set foot in her father's homeland. However, she remains optimistic about connecting with her roots in person soon. Kwn expressed complete confidence about making her debut trip to the West African nation, adding, "I have never been to Nigeria before. I know they are going to love me when I go over there."
