Nigerian Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, widely known as Rema, has opened up about his deliberate decision to keep his wealth and milestones off social media, revealing that he actively avoids flaunting his success to spare young fans from unnecessary pressure.
Speaking during a recent interview with Jam FM, the 26-year-old artist reflected on his influence as a global music figure. Recognizing that countless young people look up to him and aspire to achieve his level of success, Rema explained that his status as a role model comes with a responsibility to remain mindful of how his lifestyle affects others.
He highlighted the reality that many youth already face intense pressure from societal expectations and parental comparison. According to Rema, parents often push children into careers or degrees they do not enjoy simply to chase high-paying outcomes, making online displays of sudden affluence an additional burden for those struggling to find their path.
"A lot of young people look up to me, whether they are my fans or not. I have something they want or dream of, so I do my best not to make anyone feel bad about themselves or feel pressured," Rema said. "Everybody has their time, but some people just want to rush it because they see their fellow young person doing well. Sometimes, people tell me not to care about whether my lifestyle would pressure anyone, but I still feel some people will misinterpret it if I flaunt my lifestyle."
To counter this culture of ostentation, the singer explained that he consciously keeps his day-to-day fashion understated. By choosing streetwear over high-end designer labels, he aims to maintain a relatable persona, keeping lavish spending limited to a few personal accessories.
"I just care about the kids who are under pressure. Parents do that as well—parents compare a lot and put a lot of kids under pressure," he added. "So, I don't want anybody to rush their time or pressure themselves because of me. I just like to keep it simple. That is one reason I enjoy streetwear; I really don't do too many designers. The only thing that is really lavish about me may be my chains or watches."
