Nigerian music sensation Teniola Apata, popularly known as Teni, has opened up about the pivotal moment that transformed her approach to health and fitness. Speaking during a recent interview on Queen’s Mic, the singer revealed that a frightening bout with COVID-19 served as the ultimate wake-up call, pushing her to take her physical well-being seriously.
During the interview, Teni recalled how severe her symptoms were during one of her battles with the virus, explaining that the illness left her struggling for breath and seriously ill. The experience deeply alarmed her mother, who stepped in to take charge of the situation. Moving directly into Teni's home, her mother began preparing healthy meals and actively guiding her diet to kick-start her weight loss journey.
"There was a year I had COVID. It was so bad. I couldn’t breathe. Yeah, it was really bad. My mum was just like, ‘I’m sorry for you.’ You know, you don’t lose weight," Teni shared. "And then my mum moved into my house. She started helping me with my diet and preparing healthy meals. She was just there to tell me not to eat certain things. She became that voice of reasoning and helped me kick-start my journey."
As the initial pounds came off, the singer found motivation in the visible progress and the physical benefits that followed. Teni noted that dropping weight noticeably improved her mobility and stamina during live performances, making her feel better both on and off the stage.
While acknowledging that staying the course hasn't always been easy, Teni highlighted the importance of consistency over perfection. "When you start losing weight, you begin to see the progress and feel good about yourself. You tell yourself, ‘Okay, let’s keep going,’" she explained. "Sometimes you fall off a little bit, but then you get back on track again and keep going. I started to feel better. I started to move better during my performances. People would see me and ask me about it.”
