Hollywood actor Andrew Garfield has revealed a surprising source of inspiration behind his portrayal of Peter Parker: Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer and revolutionary icon Fela Kuti. In a viral interview clip circulating on social media, the British-American star explained how the legendary musician’s rhythm and political activism directly influenced the physical movements and core ethos of his Spider-Man performance.
Speaking in a roadside interview clip hosted by Trackstarpresents, Garfield shared a personal creative ritual he uses when preparing for film roles. "I create a playlist for every character I play, which is a lovely fun thing to do anyway," Garfield said. He explained that after landing the iconic superhero role, he began listening heavily to Fela Kuti’s catalogue and immediately felt a deep thematic alignment with Spider-Man.
For Garfield, the connection went far beyond background music, tapping into both physical rhythm and the character's underlying drive. "There was something about the sound and the rhythm that was really useful to me for that character," he reflected. "There was something about suddenly being in touch with the body, but also justice-seeking, because obviously he was a revolutionary figure."
That rhythmic energy found its way into how the actor physically embodied the hero on screen, even inside the iconic suit. Garfield noted that Fela's commanding presence and musical power helped him unlock the superhero’s presence, stating, "The way that I moved in that film in the suit has some inspiration from Fela and his music. I don't know what it is about this guy's power that I want to somehow reflect in this guy's power."
Garfield first donned the suit in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and returned for its 2014 sequel before making a acclaimed reprise in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. Meanwhile, Fela Kuti remains one of the most celebrated figures in global music history, renowned both as the creator of Afrobeat and as a fierce activist who used his music to battle political oppression and military rule in Nigeria.
The clip has sparked widespread delight and intrigue across social media, as fans react to the unexpected creative bridge between a high-flying Marvel superhero and one of Africa's greatest musical revolutionaries.
