Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has opened up about the crucial advice he received from industry colleagues Wizkid and Wande Coal during the early stages of his music career. Speaking in an Afrobeats documentary, the singer shared how the two artists helped him navigate the complex challenge of balancing higher education with his burgeoning passion for music.
Early in his journey, Davido recognized that stepping away from his studies would be a major point of friction at home. Aware that his father would never approve of him abandoning his education for an uncertain career path, he sought guidance from artists who had already navigated similar paths. When he asked Wizkid and Wande Coal how they managed to leave school to pursue music full-time, their response was simple and direct: the only way to make that transition was to "blow up" and achieve undeniable stardom.
That turning point arrived rapidly with the release of his breakout hit single, Dami Duro. The massive, nationwide success of the track catapulted Davido into mainstream fame, making it virtually impossible for him to remain a regular student at the time. "I asked Wizkid and Wande Coal how they left school to do music," Davido recalled. "They told me the only way was to blow up. I knew my dad wouldn’t allow me, but when Dami Duro blew up, I couldn’t continue."
However, his pause from academia was short-lived. To reconcile his musical ambitions with his family's emphasis on education, Davido reached an agreement with his father. Under the arrangement, his father built him a professional recording studio and gave his full blessing for the music career, provided Davido returned to complete his higher education.
Demonstrating his commitment to both endeavors, the singer successfully juggled a demanding music schedule with his coursework over the following years. His efforts culminated in 2015, when he officially graduated from Babcock University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music.
