Nigeria's U-17 women's national team, the Flamingos, written their names into football folklore on Saturday night in Rabat, defeating Japan 2-1 in a nail-biting final to claim the U-17 Women's World Cup title. The dramatic victory marks a monumental milestone for African football, making Nigeria the very first nation from the continent to lift the prestigious trophy.
The Flamingos set the tone in the first half with sharp tactical discipline and relentless attacking intent. Their efforts paid off six minutes before the interval when Awawu Bashiru broke the deadlock with a brilliant, looping strike that caught the Japanese goalkeeper off guard, sending Nigerian supporters in the stadium into absolute delight.
Nigeria doubled down on their momentum immediately after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Oluebube Umejiaku capitalized on a defensive opening to slot home Nigeria’s second goal, putting coach Akeem Busari’s side firmly in control of the championship match.
Despite facing a daunting two-goal deficit, Japan refused to back down and mounted fierce pressure late in the game. Their persistence bore fruit in the 80th minute when Fuki Ito found the net to pull one back, setting up a nerve-wracking final ten minutes. However, the Flamingos demonstrated incredible resilience, defending resolutely to hold off the late onslaught and secure their historic triumph.
The historic achievement triggered widespread national celebration, with Super Falcons star Rasheedat Ajibade leading the applause online. Taking to X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate Coach Busari and the team, Ajibade wrote: "WORLD CHAMPIONS! You made history, and you made all of Nigeria proud. I'm so proud of every one of you. The future of Nigerian football is here. Congratulations, Flamingos."
