Ayo Animashaun, the founder of The Headies music awards, has openly criticized Nigerian music stars who eagerly publicize their submissions to international award platforms while allegedly neglecting to submit their entries to domestic award schemes like The Headies.
In a series of posts on his Instagram stories on Thursday, the Hip TV boss and CEO of Smooth Promotions expressed frustration over what he views as a double standard in how local versus foreign recognition is treated. Animashaun pointed out that many artistes proudly broadcast their submissions to foreign award bodies that "don't even care about them," yet fail to participate in the local submission process—only to turn around and complain when they are omitted from The Headies' nomination lists.
Addressing the broader conversation surrounding the organization’s choices, Animashaun emphasized that the award body remains confident in its strategy and vision, despite public debate. He noted that as long as the primary beneficiaries, artistes, and corporate sponsors grasp the long-term vision, the organizers will stand firmly behind their decisions, adding that "posterity will be kind to those who see possibilities before they become obvious."
While Animashaun did not explicitly name specific individuals or events, his remarks coincided directly with the ongoing Grammy submission season. Nigerian music icons, including Davido, Asake, Seun Kuti, Tems, and Ayra Starr, have recently made headlines after publicizing their entries for the upcoming 69th Grammy Awards.
The timing of Animashaun’s critique also comes amidst scrutiny regarding the movement and scheduling of The Headies itself. Organizers recently announced the postponement of the 18th edition—themed Africa to the World—from October 23 in Toronto, Canada, to April 2027. Despite pushback from domestic fans regarding holding the Nigerian award ceremony abroad, Animashaun maintained that international venues offer crucial infrastructure, strategic partnerships, and global visibility necessary to elevate African music.
