Former Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison following his conviction for sexually assaulting former television production assistant Miriam Haley in New York in 2006. The ruling comes as part of a high-profile retrial after his initial conviction was overturned.
Before the sentence was handed down, Haley delivered an emotional statement to the court, detailing the deep personal toll the assault and subsequent legal battles have taken on her over the years. She explained that the trauma has permanently altered her sense of safety and that coming forward brought continuous public scrutiny and fear.
“Being sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein has had a devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away,” Haley told the court, adding, “It’s a life sentence for me.”
Addressing the court prior to sentencing, the 74-year-old former film producer maintained his innocence while appealing to the judge for leniency. While he expressed regret for Haley's suffering, he refused to admit guilt regarding the crime itself.
“I do have remorse for Miriam Haley’s pain, but I have to reiterate my innocence,” Weinstein stated during his address.
The 15-year sentence concludes a retrial that was ordered after New York’s highest court overturned Weinstein’s original 2020 conviction and 23-year sentence in 2024. During the retrial, the jury found him guilty of the assault against Haley, but acquitted him of a separate charge involving former model Kaja Sokola, while failing to reach a consensus on a rape charge involving Jessica Mann.
In addition to his New York sentence, Weinstein continues to face a separate 16-year prison term stemming from a 2022 rape conviction in California.
