Nigerian Afrobeats star Adekunle Gold has revealed that genotype compatibility was his primary consideration when choosing a partner, stating that he would not have married his wife, fellow singer Simi, if her genotype had not been AA.
Speaking on a recent episode of the One54 Podcast, the singer—who lives with sickle cell disease (SS genotype)—explained that practical health considerations had to take precedence over romantic feelings. He stressed that he was determined not to pass on the genetic condition to his children or risk bringing a sickly child into the world.
"I wouldn’t have married my wife if she were SS or AS," Adekunle Gold shared during the interview. "Forget love. I don’t think it makes sense to bring a child into this world and they would be sickly. When me and my wife first met, the first thing I did was to know her genotype. She is AA. That was why I proceeded with the relationship."
Since publicly disclosing his SS genotype, the singer has been an active advocate for sickle cell awareness, frequently using his platform to educate the public on the importance of genetic testing before marriage.
Adekunle Gold and Simi tied the knot in January 2019, and the couple now shares two children. His latest comments have reignited conversations across social media about the critical role health compatibility plays in long-term relationships and family planning.
