FIFA has announced a major first for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, confirming that the tournament winners will receive championship rings alongside the iconic World Cup trophy and gold medals.
The introduction of the rings marks the first time in the competition's history that champions will be presented with a commemorative ring, a tradition commonly associated with North American sports such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL. The move reflects the tournament's unique setting, with the 2026 World Cup being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
According to FIFA, 30 bespoke championship rings will be created for the winning team. During the trophy presentation, the captain and head coach will receive ceremonial rings before the full set is later custom-made and personalized for the champions.
In addition to the winners' rings, FIFA is also releasing a limited collection of 2,026 individually numbered commemorative rings for fans, with 1,996 of them set to be made available worldwide as official licensed merchandise.
The announcement has sparked plenty of discussion among football fans. While many have welcomed the addition as a unique way to celebrate the champions, others believe the World Cup trophy and medals remain the sport's greatest symbols of achievement. Regardless of opinion, the introduction of championship rings adds another historic chapter to football's biggest tournament.
