A fierce public feud has erupted between popular Nigerian On-Air Personality Adedotun Kayode, widely known as Do2dtun, and Headies founder Ayo Animashaun. The clash centers on the decision to host Nigerian music award ceremonies abroad and accusations that local artists prioritize foreign validation over homegrown recognition.
The public disagreement began when Do2dtun took to social media to criticize the Headies for moving its award ceremonies outside of Nigeria. The OAP argued that prestigious local music awards should remain rooted at home to authentically support and serve the domestic industry they represent.
“Have you ever seen them take the Grammys out of America before?” Do2dtun questioned, emphasizing that maintaining a local identity is crucial for the integrity of domestic entertainment accolades. Citing the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards as a positive model, he argued that Nigerian awards should maintain local independence rather than bend to personal choices or subjective control. “An award should be independent of your choices or how you choose to see it. This is what brands will pay money for, not something that is personally controlled.”
The critique, however, drew a sharp and personal response from Animashaun. The Headies boss dismissed Do2dtun’s artistic concerns, alleging that the broadcaster's public criticism stemmed from personal bitterness following a denied request for assistance. According to Animashaun, Dotun had previously slid into his direct messages asking for help securing an American visa to attend an event abroad.
“U criticise D Headies 4 goin abroad, yet slide into my DM asking me 2 help U attend because U want a visa. When I can’t help, U become even more bitter & criticize. So, is it really about Headies, or UR personal interests? Hypocrisy at its finest! Awards U didn’t attend in Naija,” Animashaun wrote.
Dotun swiftly and strongly rejected the allegations, challenging Animashaun’s version of their private conversation. He maintained that his critique had zero connection to obtaining travel documents, pointing out that he has traveled to the United States on numerous occasions and that his daughters were born there.
Reiterating his stance, Do2dtun insisted that the heated exchange was about the broader trajectory and health of the Nigerian entertainment industry rather than a personal vendetta against the Headies founder. He ultimately challenged Animashaun to address the substantive concerns regarding the location and independence of local awards instead of resorting to personal attacks and disclosing alleged private chats.
