Afrobeats star Fireboy DML has opened up about the initial shock he experienced after relocating to Lagos to pursue a career in music. Speaking during a recent live stream, the hitmaker admitted that his transition to the bustling city in 2016 was far from smooth, leaving him deeply unsettled by the harsh realities of his new environment in Surulere.
Reflecting on those early days, the singer shared that the intensity and fast pace of Lagos culture took a toll on him. Within just two weeks of arriving, he witnessed disturbing events—including public mental health crises, dead bodies on the streets, and rampant cult activities—that made him rethink his surroundings. He noted that the intimidating demeanors of everyday Lagosians initially terrified him, though he eventually adapted to survive. "Now, I also look like those scary people," he joked, describing how he gradually absorbed the city’s hardened energy.
The "Vibration" crooner also shared a lighthearted story about the culture clash between his growing fame and his traditional family dynamics. During an appearance on the Afrobeats Podcast, Fireboy revealed how an Instagram Story post sparked widespread panic in his family's WhatsApp group after he shared a snippet of himself holding an unlit cigarette.
The post triggered an immediate emotional response from his mother, who broke down in tears over her son's apparent new habit. Fireboy had to quickly jump into the family chat to manage the fallout, reassuring them that the cigarette was simply a visual prop for showbiz and brand image. However, with a laugh, the singer candidly confessed the full truth of the moment: "I later smoked it, sha; I can't lie."
