American singer Chris Brown has received an eight-month suspended prison sentence in the United Kingdom following his involvement in an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023.
The 37-year-old artist was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty in July to one count of affray. Because the sentence was suspended for 12 months, Brown will avoid immediate jail time, though he risks imprisonment if he violates the terms of his suspension over the coming year.
The incident occurred at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, central London, where Brown struck Diaw twice on the head with a glass tequila bottle, causing injuries to the victim's head and knee. Prosecutors presented CCTV footage capturing the attack, which also involved Brown’s vocal coach, 40-year-old Omololu Akinlolu. Akinlolu was handed a four-month sentence, also suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs.
Presiding over the case, Judge Tony Baumgartner condemned the violent behavior, warning that striking someone on the head with a glass bottle carried severe risks of far greater harm. He further emphasized that commercial success and celebrity status would offer no special treatment in a court of law.
Brown was arrested in Manchester in May 2025 after returning to the UK for a concert, over two years after the assault took place. Although he initially faced broader charges including assault and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, prosecutors dropped those counts after his guilty plea to affray. The court's decision officially concludes the criminal proceedings surrounding the London nightclub altercation.
