Veteran Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, widely known as Charly Boy, has publicly celebrated the engagement of his daughter, Adaeze, to a woman. The iconic showman shared a video from the engagement ceremony on his Instagram page, referring to the couple as his "beautiful Princess and her Husband" and inviting his followers to extend their blessings to the couple.
Adaeze also announced the milestone on her own page, posting a photo alongside her partner with the caption "WE'RE ENGAGED!" and the hashtag #mrsandmrsgray2027. Expressing her joy for the future, she wrote, "Here's to a lifetime of love, laughter, growth, and making beautiful memories together. I can't wait for everything God has in store for us. Forever sounds even sweeter with you." Adaeze was previously married to Metu Anu in a traditional wedding in Abuja in 2018 before the union later ended in divorce.
The announcement quickly sparked intense debate across social media platforms, drawing a mix of congratulatory well-wishes and sharp criticism. The divided reactions highlight the complex social and legal realities surrounding same-sex relationships in Nigeria, where such unions remain criminalized under law and face widespread societal taboo.
This is not the first time the Oputa family has openly navigated LGBTQ+ topics in the public eye. Charly Boy's other daughter, Dominique "Dewy" Oputa, is also openly in a relationship with a woman, with both daughters currently residing outside Nigeria.
Throughout his decades-long career, Charly Boy—often called "Area Fada"—has built a legacy around challenging traditional norms and advocating for unconventional social views. Over the years, the father of 10 and grandfather of 14 has consistently spoken candidly about his family life, his own gender expression, and his personal journey, continuing to stand by his children even when his positions clash with conservative Nigerian values.
