Nigerian singer Bella Shmurda has sparked widespread conversation online after a resurfaced interview clip revealed how he once stole and sold a neighbor's bicycle to fund his early music career. The throwback footage, originally from an appearance on the media show Echo Room, captures the artist opening up about the desperate measures he took while trying to break into the music industry while living in the Okoko area of Lagos.
Recounting the incident, Bella Shmurda explained that the bicycle belonged to a boy who lived in the apartment above his. Because the bicycle was parked in the shared compound downstairs, it offered easy access. Under the cover of darkness, he took the bicycle, hid it, and later transported it to the nearby Alaba market, where he sold it for ₦7,000.
The singer admitted that the proceeds from the theft went directly toward paying for half of a studio recording session—a crucial step for his fledgling music career at the time. Reflecting on the decision, he expressed genuine remorse for his actions, noting that while he felt forced by his circumstances, it was an act that weighed heavily on his conscience.
Fortunately, the story comes with a resolution. Bella Shmurda revealed that after achieving success in the music industry, he tracked down the boy and bought him a brand-new bicycle to make amends for his past mistake.
The artist used the story as a cautionary lesson for aspiring musicians, explicitly warning young people against turning to crime to achieve their dreams. He noted that resort to illegal means often spirals out of control and urged upcoming acts not to follow that path. Following the resurgence of the video, fans and social media users have largely responded with praise for his honesty, acknowledging his humble beginnings and commending him for eventually making right by the victim.
