Former Big Brother Naija housemate Ikechukwu Cross Okonkwo, popularly known as Cross, has expressed anger after a street beggar vandalized his vehicle while he was caught in traffic around the Ikate area of Lekki, Lagos.
In a series of videos shared on his Instagram page on Tuesday, the reality TV star recounted how a group of beggars approached his car while traffic was at a standstill. Cross noted that he did not turn them away or act hostile. However, without warning, one of the men ripped off the rubber weatherstripping moulding from his windscreen before fleeing the scene. Footage uploaded by Cross showed the visible damage left along the edge of his windshield.
Desperate to catch the culprit, Cross gave chase on foot but was unable to catch up. "He ran so fast," Cross said, expressing disbelief at the bold act. Dismayed by the security situation, he directed his frustration toward public authorities, questioning why individuals with such motives are permitted to roam major roads unchecked. "Nigeria, you're not safe in your own country," he remarked.
Following the chase, Cross engaged local street youth and transport workers in the area for assistance. While returning to drop off his contact details with them, he spotted the suspect across the road. However, the perpetrator recognized him and fled before he could be apprehended. "I feel so pained. My body is boiling," Cross added.
Cross’s experience highlights a recurring pattern of traffic-related crime along the Lekki and Ajah corridors. Just days earlier, a female motorist reported a similar encounter in Lekki at around 9:00 PM. A three-man gang stripped a chrome windshield strip—valued at ₦300,000—from her Mercedes-Benz while she was trapped in stationary traffic, before proceeding to rob motorists in vehicles behind her.
Security concerns regarding individuals posing as beggars in the Lekki-Ajah axis have persisted for years. In August 2021, the Lagos State Police Command launched 24-hour stop-and-search operations along the corridor following rising reports of criminals disguising as beggars to rob commuters. The Lagos State Government subsequently formed a specialized joint task force to tackle the issue, citing intelligence reports that some street beggars harbored dangerous weapons.
Despite past interventions, the latest incident adds to mounting complaints from Lagos residents over aggressive street begging, property damage, and safety risks in gridlock traffic.
