Nene Aderibigbe, the mother of Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr, has voiced strong concerns over the impact of social media on Generation Z, warning that many young people have traded independent thinking for online validation.
Sharing her perspective on the mindset of the younger generation, Aderibigbe expressed worry over their heavy reliance on smartphones and their struggle to uncover their true potential. She noted that constant exposure to digital platforms has disrupted traditional ways of thinking and self-discovery.
“Social media has just turned a lot of things upside down. They don’t have their own thinking again; it is only people’s thinking they use now,” she said.
She further emphasized that while many members of Gen Z possess remarkable talents and innate abilities, their constant immersion in social media prevents them from recognizing and nurturing these gifts.
To break free from this cycle, Aderibigbe urged young people to intentionally disconnect from their devices and cultivate quiet reflection. She advised them to dedicate at least two to three hours daily away from their screens to focus on self-awareness and mindfulness.
“Take your time, drop your phone down for two, three hours, do mental note, put your head down, take a mental note or meditate,” she recommended.
